A "Hate Crime"? Or a Bizarre Instance of Drunken Agit-Prop?

The other night in New York City, a drunken white guy asked a cabby if he was Muslim and, when the driver answered yes, pulled out a knife and proceeded to stab him. The cabby was able to lock the drunk in the back of his cab until police arrived.

An obvious case of a white racist in a froth over the GZM, right? Well, no, not exactly. According to the Village Voice, the 21-year old

Michael Enright of Brewster, New York, who was booked on charges of attempted murder and assault with a weapon as a hate crime, is listed on Facebook as an employee of the New York City-based Intersections International, a "global initiative dedicated to promoting justice, reconciliation and peace across lines of faith, culture, ideology, race, class, national borders and other boundaries that divide humanity." And a few weeks ago, they announced their support for -- you guessed it -- the Cordoba House, better known to many as the "Ground Zero Mosque."

Weird, huh? Why would a lefty "social justice" type do such a thing? Well, this might be a clue. According to a Politico post, prior to the assualt Enright yelled, "Assalamu Alaikum. Consider this a checkpoint." So maybe he was performing a strange bit of agit-prop. In his sozzled state, maybe he thought he could highlight the plight of Palestinians forced to endure the humiliation of "checkpoints" by pretending to be a big, bad IDFer.
