George [Smitherman] who has spoken out against QuAIA's place in the parade, concurred the issue is complex. "The [gay] community is torn apart by this in a very serious way," he said. "There is an inherent openness for free speech and that argument goes a long way...at the end of the day to get this issue resolved the city may have to refer this matter to the courts." Rob Ford begged to differ. "Actually I think it's pretty straightforward, it's not complicated at all. There's zero tolerance, and as mayor I'm not going to give them a dime," he said. "We're not going to tolerate any hate crimes."Notice which candidate was unequivocal and which spoke weasel words in an effort to stride both the pro-Israel and the squishy Lefty/hardened anti-Zionist camps. Does that give you a clue about what sort of mayors they'd be?

The Weasel and the Bull
The Jewish community is divided (when isn't it?) over who they, as Jews, should vote for mayor--the Liberal gay guy or the fat conservative? Personally, I'm not torn at all. The conservative gets my vote, because he's conservative and so am I. That said, there are some tribal members who are on the fence, and who are trying to decide which candidate would, as they say, be best for the Jews. There again, no problem. While Smitherman may say all the "right" things (I was present at a gathering of Jews when S. urged them to vote for him because he's a member of a minority group just like them and therefore understands what that experience is like--in other words, he played the victimhood card), I wouldn't count on him coming through in the clutch, because, well, he's a leftist. As such, he's well rehearsed at speaking out of both sides of his mouth simultaneously, as he did here (quoted in a National Post article) at the height of the QuAIA/Pride parade funding controversy:
