...The secret of Canada’s success resided in the strength of its civil society and of its “deep” culture embedded in the Protestant faith that held freedom of individual as an ideal.Freedom's just another word for what we had before Pierre E. Trudeau turned the joint to crap.
At the head of his book’s first chapter, Gairdner quotes Thomas D’Arcy McGee, — from McGee’s speech at the Legislative Assembly of Canada in February 1865 — declaring: “There is not on the face of the earth a freer people than the inhabitants of these colonies.”
Then, in the past half-century, Canada was set on the slippery slope to increasingly become, in Gairdner’s words, “the regulatory, or welfare, or cradle-to-grave Nanny State,” slowly bringing ruin for the civil society as the bastion of free people.
This story of Canada’s trouble is bleak, but it is necessary to learn. And Gairdner’s book is one patriot’s precious gift to his fellow citizens.
