Operation Dogarossa

Now it can be told: the Nazis thought they had a winning strategy for defeating the Allies. It involved teaching dogs--yes, dogs--to talk, read and spell.

So my dog (a black retriever) is pretty smart. He can, for example, open the back door to let himself in. When his food or water bowl is empty, he will bat it around with his paw to notify me that it's time for a refill. When we had our previous toaster, he could push down the lever and catch the ejected bagel in mid-air. (He loves bagels.) When you play the piano, he will throw back his head and sing with gusto--a veritable Dogarotti. He can even "speak," in a manner of speaking, employing a whole vocabulary of grunts, growls, squeaks, grumbles and barks to express himself.

Of course, I have no idea what he's saying, but I shudder to think of how the war might have gone had the Nazis been able to figure it out. ;)
