A former head of Mississauga-based Palestine House is duking it out with that burg's wildly popular and very ancient mayor:

A former president of Palestine House says he's filing a conflict of interest charge against Mayor Hazel McCallion in Ontario Court. 

Elias Hazineh, 59, who has long had close ties to former Ward 6 councillor Carolyn Parrish, told The [Mississauga] News today that the documents will be filed in Brampton court within a week. 

"I have every intention to do that, but it hasn't been done yet," said Hazineh, who currently sits on the board of directors at Palestine House, an education and cultural centre on Erindale Station Rd. 

The charge will allege that McCallion was in violation of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act (MCIA) four years ago when she voted on a Region of Peel bylaw amendment that could have saved her son's company $9 million.

Hazineh has been active in Mississauga's political community for years. He finished third in the 2006 municipal election when he ran for Ward 10 councillor. He worked in Parrish's constituency office when she was an MP and once served as president of the Mississauga-Erindale Liberal Riding Association.  

There has been speculation that Hazineh has been working with a group of people including Parrish and high-profile municipal lawyer Stephen D'Agostino over the past few weeks. D'Agostino was hired by Parrish and other City councillors who sought legal advice during the Mississauga judicial inquiry. 

However, Hazineh said his decision to file is in no way influenced by Parrish, a nemesis of Mississauga's longtime mayor. 

He said he's filing the charge as a concerned citizen.  

"I'm concerned about the turn of events in Mississauga and I'm concerned about the integrity of the system," he told The News. "I see an attitude that you can get away with anything because you're a long-standing mayor and the public seems to be tolerating it."...
