Thanks, Will. We're all very sad. The consolation is that Webster was his normal happy, goofy self right up till the end, when his heart gave out. His last day of life couldn't have been better. He ate all his food. He put his head on my knee while I was eating my breakfast bagel, his ever-effective way of persuading me to give him a morsel. He played with his toys. He love bombed my son with kisses when he came home from school. He played in the back yard with my husband. Not long after the tumor in his heart felled him at last. Even as my husband picked him up to take him to the vet hospital, Webster wagged his tail, happy, so happy, even at the very end. He passed soon after arriving at the hospital, quietly and peacefully. I am so sad to lose him, but I take much comfort in knowing that he had a great life, a great last day and an easy death; he deserved it.
I am very sad that Webster passed away. Having recently lost our own Golden Retriever, I know how difficult it is for the family. That he led a happy, loving and loved life is a great consolation.
Yes it's important that they don't suffer needlessly , sometimes i feel we should extend the same compassion to humans that we know won't make it and go trough so much suffering and pain.
It will take a long time to heal , i still wake up and the first tought is be careful not to step on the dog, as he used to sleep next to my side of the bed. If it were not for my own health probs i might have taken another one but he was the oldest of the 4 dogs i had, each lived respectivly 14 years only he lived longer.... it's a life time. Because if we need to go to hospital they miss us as well and if you're alone who will care for them, they don't understand what's happening.
My toughts go out to you and your family, i know all to well how you must feel now.
