The Conundrum That Is Angela Merkel

On the one hand she restates her conviction that the social doctrine of "multiculturalism is a sham." On the other hand, she opens the floodgates of Muslim immigration.

If the former is true--which, undoubtedly and demonstrably, it is--then this huge cohort of "migrants" will be, and will remain, unassimilable. And yet, Merkel still feels compelled to let them in.

That being so, it can't just be residual guilt for the Holocaust. Something else--something that as yet defies comprehension--must be in play here.

For now it, as well as Ms. Merkel herself, remains opaque and confoundingly enigmatic.
