Richler's Loopy Rationale

In an interview on AM 640, Noah (son of Mordecai) Richler says that he was inspired to run for Parliament in the last federal election because he was so affronted by what then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper had to say in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. (Richler has documented his experience as a failed Socialist candidate in a book.)

For the record, here's what Harper had to say at the time:

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the attack on a satirical news magazine in Paris is a reminder that acts of terrorism can happen anywhere. 

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives during this heinous crime and wish a speedy recovery to those injured. The perpetrators of this attack must be apprehended and brought to justice,” Harper said in a statement emailed to media Wednesday following the deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo. 

“This barbaric act, along with recent attacks in Sydney, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and Ottawa, is a grim reminder that no country is immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world,” Harper said. 

“Canada and its allies will not be intimidated and will continue to stand firmly together against terrorists who would threaten the peace, freedom and democracy our countries so dearly value. Canadians stand with France on this dark day,” Harper said...
