NatPo Editorial Derives Wrong "Lesson"--One Which Ignores Jihad, a Religious Imperative--From B.C. Terror Plot

One of the "lessons" the editorial ("What the Victoria plot teaches us") proffers is that "cranks" who want to unleash mass catastrophe don't necessarily have to hew to any "coherent ideology":

3. Every crank with Internet access does not require any coherent ideology. The RCMP says the alleged plotters were "self-radicalized," a term also applied to alleged Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar. In Tamerlan's case, investigators could find no significant terror groups, known radicals or extremists mentors, instead "finding a frustrated young man who felt out of place in the United States."...

That's because investigators, including Canadian ones, will do anything they can to avoid implicating Islam proper, and the clear, coherent jihad imperative embedded in its core teachings. Instead, for reasons of fear, political correctness and willful blindness, they will impute such antics to a so-called perversion of what we are assured is an entirely peaceful faith. Hence, the B.C. pair being "inspired by al-Qaeda ideology" and not by Islam's doctrine of armed jihad (which, in fact, is what inspires al Qaeda). That dhimmi-ish assertion is called into question, though, by this Ceeb report. It reveals that the pair, who took a violent turn only when they "reverted" to Islam, seemed to have that coherent ideology thing down pat:

 A B.C. couple accused of trying to detonate pressure cooker bombs during Canada Day celebrations in Victoria have been described by a friend as "former street punks" who found Islam, but then exhibited increasingly odd religious behaviour before they were kicked out of a Surrey mosque. 

John Stewart Nuttall, in his late 30s, and Amanda Korody, late 20s, are alleged to have turned ordinary pressure cookers into improvised explosive devices filled with rusted nails, nuts, bolts and washers. 

The RCMP claim the couple were "inspired by al-Qaeda ideology," but have not released any details on exactly what that means. 

Ashley Volpatti said she met Nuttall and Korody at a corner store, and described the former street kids as "really, really nice people" who were attending a local mosque. 

"Before they turned Muslim they were street punks. That's what they were." 

But Volpatti said that as they became increasingly religious, their behaviour changed. 

"Johnny played guitar, and then about seven months ago he got rid of all his guitars.  

Why? Don't know. He loved them. That's what he was into." 

"She would always have her hair covered, long sleeves. If they weren't in traditional dress they were in camo-gear — camo pants, camo shirts." 

In one conversation, she said, Nuttall became quite angry, saying his brother had served with the Canadian military, but that he believed Canadian soldiers shouldn't be over "on Muslim soil." 

Then about six months ago, Volpatti said, the pair became distant and stopped socializing with her and her boyfriend. 

"He used to go to the mosque and he got kicked out of the mosque. Why I don't know, but that was when he really, really got into the religion.… I think a lot of it had to do they were too much into their religion, way too much into their religion."...

Should've joined the Hare Krishna instead. Its coherent ideology doesn't involved waging jihad on infidels via pressure cookers packed with shrapnel.

Update: According to Maclean's, Johnny Guitar was violent pre-reversion, but seems to have channeled that violence into jihad:

VANCOUVER – Four years ago, the man RCMP say planned a Canada Day terror attack at the British Columbia legislature was too drunk and violent to be kept on as the guitarist in a heavy metal band. 

But some time between March 2009 — after his failed tryout for The Lust Boys in Victoria — and this March, when an indictment says the bombing conspiracy began, John Nuttall allegedly became a home-grown terrorist inspired by al-Qaida to kill fellow Canadians. 

“It’s crazy stuff,” said Colin Stuart, a.k.a. Tommy Thrust, who met Nuttall through an online musician forum where the band was looking for a new guitarist. 

“It doesn’t really make any sense to me really, because back when he was in the band, when I knew him, he never made any reference to religion at all. He was more into politics, but what he understood of politics.” 

Crazy stuff, indeed, lots of which was on display in their squalid digs:

On Wednesday, there was little in the way of furnishings or belongings in the apartment, but what was there was strewn about in messy piles. It wasn’t clear whether the mess was the result of the police search. The suite smelled like cat urine and cat foot scattered on the floor. 

On one wall, there was a poster with what appeared to be Arabic writing and a piece of paper money, also with Arabic writing, tacked onto it. On the kitchen counter sat several prescription bottles of methadone with Korody’s name on the labels. 

Inside the bedroom, another poster read: “Celebrating the life and birth of the Prophet Muhammad,” with the date of a women’s conference printed below. Also in the bedroom, was a television set with small holes smashed into the screen.
Beyond the TV, there were no other electronics, such as a computer, inside the apartment...

Interesting. If they had no internet access, then how did they, as the RCMP put it, "self-radicalize"?

A man in traditional Muslim dress would sometimes pick the pair up or drop them off, she [their landlady] said.

Update: The penny drops for a former Johnny Guitar pal:

When Daryl Nelson called his close friend John Nuttall last Sunday to play paintball, he was disturbed by the evasive responses he got. 

Nuttall, now facing terrorism charges after a foiled bomb plot targeting the B.C. legislature, first claimed he was out of town in the Okanagan. 

Then he said he was in Victoria. And then he changed his mind again, purporting to be in Kelowna. 

“He kept switching his story and it was like more and more secretive,” Nelson said in an interview. 

Twenty-four hours later, Nuttall and his common-law spouse Amanda Korody were in jail, accused of being inspired by al-Qaida and planting pressure cooker bombs to detonate during Victoria’s Canada Day celebrations. 

It was particularly troubling for Nelson given that Nuttall had expressed outrage at the exact same terrorist tactic in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings in April. 

“He was saying it gives Muslims a bad name and all this other crap,” Nelson said. “Then all of a sudden he goes and does something like this … Now what I am starting to think, he was just telling me that so I would never perceive him as that sort of threat.”...

Gee, ya think?

New Wave Terrorism for "Reverts"--"Muslim Punk"

Nuttall’s tastes were for heavy metal. He posted four poor-quality recordings on a music website along with a picture of himself posing with four guitars. The undated songs include titles such as “The End of the World,” and “In League With Satan,” with the lyrics: “We are possessed by all that is evil, The death of your god we demand, We spit at the virgin you worship, And sit at Lord Satan’s Left Hand.” 

In a Facebook post Tuesday, Victoria-based band Lust Boys identified Nuttall — whom they called Johnny Blade — as the group’s ex-guitarist.

In online postings, Nuttall identified himself as belonging to a band called No World Order, a Muslim punk band that was created in Victoria but moved to the Surrey, B.C., area in mid-August, 2011. 

“I’m a Muslim punk from Victoria, Guitarist for N.W.O . . . Looking for other Muslim punks to meet InshallAllah,” Nuttall wrote. 

The band was looking for a drummer — “We are not adverse (sic) to you if you aren’t Moslim, even if you are just curious. We are just into hardcore and looking for like-minded musicians especially drummers lol.”

"No World Order" sounds more nihilistic than jihadist, no? Or is this an example of what happens when a nihilist with a gee-tar and a long arrest record finds Allah? (It would be interesting to know whether he was converted during one of his prison terms.)

Canadian "Revert" Argues for More Muslim Engagement in Canadian Politics By Saluting Egypt's Salafists

In sharp contrast to the ubiquitous media image of alienated Muslims - young Muslims in particular - a lot more people from the Muslim community have been running for political office or encouraging and supporting others in their community to run for office, according to Dr. Kathy Bullock, Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto.  

Speaking at a Canadian Charger fundraising dinner, recently, in Waterloo, Dr. Bullock indicated that Muslims themselves continues to struggle with the question of their identity.  

“There are now eight or nine Muslims in federal, provincial or municipal office. It's difficult to give an exact number because some say: 'I'm from a Muslim family, and some say 'I'm a Muslim.' If they don't fully identify themselves, I don't count them.”
Dr. Bullock said that since 2011, when she and Dr. Paul Nesbitt-Larking published their report “Canadian Muslim Youth and Political Participation: A Willingness to Engage,” there has been a significant increase in Muslim participation in Canadian politics.  

“The Arab Spring was a factor. A lot of Muslims who were arguing that Muslims don't participate in politics because Islam is incompatible with politics are now participating. When the Al Nour Party, consisting  mainly of Salafi followers -  a very conservative modern orthodox version of Islam - won 25 per cent of the vote in Egypt, I think that had an effect on Muslims in Canada. They saw that the Salafis had been saying, 'We don't participate in politics,' and then they ran candidates and won, so we can also participate in Canadian politics.” 

Participation is important, Dr. Bullock said, because it leads to integration. “Once we started participating at the political level; it shows that we really want to be part of society. We are positive, contributing members of society.”...

Seriously, Kathy? Salafis aren't even positive contributing members of Egyptian society, much less Canada's.

Did Free Speech Lead to the Holocaust?

An ex-Big Deal Jew still insists that it did:

Bernie Farber, former CEO of Canadian Jewish Congress, said the organization “led the way in trying to have people understand the importance of having on the books a civil procedure dealing with hate groups. 

“The loss of Section 13 is not something to celebrate. Canada is not living up to its international obligations in relation to hate laws. Democratic countries have been asked to come up with procedures to delineate between the traditions of free speech and protecting minorities.” 

“It is a fine balance,” he said. “Section 13 for the most part found that balance.” Human Rights legislation does so without “the heavy hand of the criminal law.” 

Farber said the “flaws in Section 13” should have been addressed, particularly its “onerous penalties. 

“But one doesn’t throw out the baby with the bath water.”

Actually, one does--when both baby and bath water are toxic; when they give Jews haunted by the Holocaust a false sense of security at the expense of personal liberty; and when they end up serving the interests of those (Marxists, Islamists, "social justice" Utopians, etc.) who abjure Western freedom. But do continue, sir:

Words can escalate into something more lethal, just as they did in Nazi Germany, he said.

I'm not sure which history books Mr. Baby Bathwater has consulted, but that analysis is simplistic verging on the asinine veering into the imbecilic.Was there free speech in Hitler's Germany?  Nuh-uh, because in a totalitarian polity "words" are under tight control of those in power. Could another Holocaust happen today? For sure, but not because state censorship has been canned in Canada, thereby reinvigorating the Nazi cause. It could happen if and when fanatical Shia theocrats get their hands on a nuke and decide to jump start their end-of-days eschatology by incinerating Israel.

It's hard to see how having a Section 13 on the books could do much of anything to prevent that. Heck, it couldn't even stop Zafar Bangash from spewing his Khomeinist Zionhass at Queen's Park.

"Self-Radicalized" Duo ("Reverts" or Fellow Travelers?) Charged With Terrorism Plot in B.C.

Don't worry, though. Officials are certain the two have no "international" ties:

Two B.C. residents have been charged in an al-Qaeda-inspired Canada Day terror plot that involved pressure cooker bombs similar to the ones used in the Boston Marathon bombings. 

Amanda Marie Korody, 30, and John Stewart Nuttall, 39, both of Surrey, B.C., have each been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and possession of an explosive substance. 

They were arrested Monday and are accused of building explosive devices with the "purpose of causing death or serious bodily injuries," which were placed outside the B.C. legislature in Victoria on Canada Day. 

Police said Korody and Nuttall, both Canadian citizens, were "inspired by al-Qaeda ideology" but added the incident has no international links. 

At the press conference, police said the pair were self-radicalized and had discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques...

Isn't the contention that they were "self-radicalized" more, not less, alarming than the idea that they were radicalized at some mosque? The former means that you don't even have to leave the comfort of home to get "inspired" by Islamic supremacism. All you have to do is turn on your computer, find the appropriate site, and you're off to the A-Q races.

No Kafirs Speaking the Truth About Islam, Please. We're British

Robert Spencer details the British government's objections to his visiting the U.K.:

The British Home Office was kind enough to spell out which of my views and opinions were so unacceptable as to make it “not conducive to the public good” for me to enter the country. The Home Office’s letter stated that I said this:

… the Prophet Muhammad said that when the Muslims fight the Jews, each and every stone and tree will say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him…

I have to admit that the Home Office has a point. After all, to suggest that Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, whom Islamic scholar Karen Armstrong has likened to Gandhi, called for the genocide of the Jews – clearly such a thing would be morally abhorrent.  

Theresa May, the British Home secretary, almost certainly has been told again and again that Islam teaches tolerance of Jews and Christians as “People of the Book.” Saying that Muhammad told Muslims to kill Jews would be hateful! Islamophobic!

And there is more. The Home Office also depicted me quoting what I brazenly misrepresented as Islamic supremacist aspirations:

We will control the land of the Vatican; we will control Rome and introduce Islam in it. Yes, the Christians, who carve crosses on the breasts of the Muslims in Kosovo — and before then in Bosnia, and before then in many places in the world — will yet pay us the Jiziya [poll tax paid by non-Muslims under Muslim rule], in humiliation, or they will convert to Islam….

Horrors. That is bad: to suggest that Islam, which every right-thinking person knows is tolerant, pluralistic, and peaceful, has imperialist ambitions to conquer and subjugate Europe – clearly such a view would incite hatred against Muslims, and I have to admit that under the circumstances I understand why the Home Office banned me.
And – I am abashed to admit – it gets even worse. The Home Office also quoted me thusly:

There is no doubt that one’s devotion to jihad for the sake of Allah and one’s will to shed blood, smash skulls, and chop off body parts for the sake of Allah and in defense of His religion constitute an honor for the believer.

Now, that’s just going too far. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently sponsored a huge ad campaign designed to show that jihad was walking on the beach with a loved one, or dropping off the kids at soccer practice. Everyone knows that the one thing that jihad is not is warfare against and murder of those who don’t believe in Islam. Only hate-filled Islamophobes contend otherwise, and that’s why I was banned from the United Kingdom. 

I feel so ashamed. 

Except that there’s one catch. In reality, I didn’t say any of those things, and none of them are in the letter to me from the Home Office. Those are all the words of Mohammed al-Arifi, a Saudi cleric who just last week was admitted into Britain without any difficulty...

Egyptians See Obama As a Two-Time Loser

They hated him for supposedly supporting Mubarak (even though he didn't), and despise him even more for backing the Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi:

So here’s a question that’s nagging at me as we watch millions of Egyptians express their loathing for Mohamed Mursi, their hapless, power-grabbing president, and for his Muslim Brotherhood movement: How exactly did the U.S. come to be seen by Egyptian secularists and liberals as the handmaiden of a cultish fundamentalist political party whose motto includes this heartening sentiment: “Jihad is our way, and dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope”?  

I mean, how did the U.S. fail to formulate a strategy that would advance both American interests and American values in the largest and most crucial Arab state? Within a span of just a few years, Egyptians have somehow convinced themselves that the U.S. has been an ally of both Egypt’s former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, and Mubarak’s main enemy, the Muslim Brotherhood.

 

Now, Egypt is again on the brink of chaos, and the White House’s call for Mursi to schedule early elections won’t convince many Egyptians that President Barack Obama is on the side of the people...

Egyptians aren't stupid. They know that Obama isn't on the side of the people. He is only on the side of Obama.

Egypt is coming apart at the seams. The Syrian civil war has taken the lives of over 100,000 people and the Assad regime—which President Obama has demanded give up power—appears to be winning with the help of Russian and Iranian arms and Hezbollah ground forces. Iran has vowed to continue enriching uranium, as it gets closer to amassing enough to build a nuclear weapon. And the Putin government in Russia continues to thumb its nose at the United States by refusing—as did China—to hand over NSA leaker/spy Edward Snowden. 

With all that on its plate, you’d think America’s foreign policy chief would be up to his neck dealing with these crises. But in case you hadn’t heard, Secretary of State John Kerry wasn’t paying much attention to any of that in the last few days. Instead, Kerry was shuttling back and forth between Jerusalem and Ramallah like a low-level functionary attempting to craft an agreement that would finally bring the Palestinians back to the Middle East peace talks they’ve been boycotting for four and a half years.

Well, after all, once that Jew-Pali thing is a done deal everything else will fall into place, right?
