Ottawa in Lockdown as a Canadian Soldier Is Shot and At Least One Gunman Remains on the Loose

As I write, a crisis is unfolding in Ottawa, Canada's capital. It began earlier today at Canada's war memorial when a Canadian soldier was shot in the chest at close range. That was followed by a gunman--at the moment it's unclear if it's the same one--who entered the Parliament Building and was killed by the Sergeant-at-Arms (the person responsible for security there). Meanwhile, shots have also been heard near the Rideau Centre, a large shopping mall not far from Parliament Hill.

As it stands now, much of Ottawa's core--including office buildings, schools and, of course, Parliament--is in lockdown.

It remains to be seen how it all plays out and who these shooters are.

That said, there's one thing to be grateful for at this time: it's that Stephen Harper--and not "diversity"-besotted Justin Trudeau--is our prime minister.

Update: There's a report that the shooters were wearing "Islamic garb."

Update: I'm now hearing (on CBC radio) that this might be a "well-planned, Mumbai-style attack."

Update: The CBC has just confirmed that the soldier who was shot at the National War Memorial this morning--he was standing on guard there--has now died.

Update: The RCMP has scheduled a briefing for 2 o'clock.

Update: ISIS called for attacks on Canada last month, now it's happening

Update: We are all Israel now.

Oh No--More RCMP "Outreach"!

Tarek Fatah describes it here:
Lost in the horror of these murders that some are still referring to as a “possible” terrorist attack, was the news on Saturday that three Muslim girls of Somali heritage, who wanted to travel to the Mideast and join ISIS in Syria as wives of jihadis, were back home and free.
The Toronto Star reported the teenage girls’ parents had tipped off the RCMP, who arranged to apprehend the teens in Turkey and return them to Toronto.
What was particularly disturbing was that instead of arresting and charging these three ISIS recruits, the RCMP simply sent them back into the community, under the care of their parents.
The Star quoted their families’ lawyer saying, “The parents felt comfortable in contacting police to prevent the young girls from ruining their lives.”
He said Somali community leaders are happy the RCMP has not prosecuted them and hopes, instead, to glean intelligence from the case which will stop others.
In my view, this is multiculturalism taken to its worst extreme.
Twenty years ago, would the RCMP have released teenage IRA recruits back into the care of their parents?
Well, of course not. But then, it wasn't performing "outreach" to the Irish community.

Anyone else think it's time for an official inquiry into the Mounties' modus operandi vis-a-vis the jihad?

Why Would Three Young American Chicks (Who Got No Further Than Germany) Want to Run Off to Join ISIS?

Have no fear, John Kerry is looking into it:
The United States is "very, very grateful to Germany," Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday after three American teenage girls suspected of intending to join Islamist militants were apprehended at Frankfurt Airport. Two sisters, aged 17 and 15, and another 16-year-old flew back to their home of Denver voluntarily after their parents contacted German officials who stopped them at the airport over the weekend.
"It is under investigation now. Our folks are looking at the causes and impacts very carefully...this is an example of good cooperation between us, and the increased vigilance of law enforcement on this issue of the movement of people from one country to another," Kerry told a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
Knowing Kerry, he'll find some way to blame it on the failure of the Israel-Palestinian "peace" process.

Update: My "Jacksonian" advice for Kerry:

Don't blame it on the Jew state.
Don't blame it on their sad fate.
Don't blame it on our "hate".
Blame it on the jeehad.

And They Call It Butty Love...

Mark Steyn riffs on a hit song du jour, and how the chick who sings it, a gal with an ample bedonkadonk, differs from Doris Day, a canary of yesteryear whom Bob Hope affectionately dubbed "J.B." (for her "jut butt"):
MS: I heard this song by Meghan Trainor, 'All About That Bass', which is like a huge hit at the moment. And it's basically ...a love song to Meghan Trainor's butt. It's about a woman who has like a ...not Doris Day's pert jut butt - I don't want to make this the subtext of the show, but she is rather more spectacularly endowed in that department ...and the song is basically 'yes, my butt is huge, and isn't it fabulous, and I'm singing this love song to my butt.' It's basically the 'I'll Be Seeing You' for butts. It's basically 'The Way You Look Tonight' for butts....
I mean, it would never have occurred to Nat King Cole to sing a love song to his butt. And what I find so odd about these things today is they're less and less about boy meets girls or whatever... they're essentially these naval-gazing songs about how fabulous I am. It's not about: Oh, some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger across a crowded room. No, it's some enchanted evening, you may look in the mirror and see how fabulous your butt looks.
They're writing songs of love, butt not for me?

In the same post, Mark comes to my aid in dating his Seth Rogan-esque photo (the one the NatPo always uses). I guessed that it dated from 1997 or thereabouts, but apparently it could be--yikes!--at least 10 years older.

Now, I happen to recall 1987 with great fondness; it's the year I married my marvelous husband (to whom I'm still hitched). But if your official headshot was taken the same year that "Walk Like an Egyptian" topped the charts, it's a clue that it's time for a change.

Incidentally, if you walk like an Egyptian, you'll have a "jut butt" for sure (see below).

Dead Canadian Soldier Mowed Down by Canadian Jihadi a Casualty of RCMP "Outreach"?

Well, that's one way to look at it:
The RCMP said Tuesday it had been working with Martin Rouleau to help him overcome his extremist thinking...
Once Rouleau (who initially "seemed like a typical and fairly boring convert") started posting his radical thoughts on Facebook back in June, he appeared on the RCMP's radar. A month later, the RCMP  confiscated his passport (but couldn't charge him with anything). That's when the "outreach" really kicked in:
But police met repeatedly with Mr. Rouleau, his family and the imam at the mosque he attended, trying to talk him down from his newfound obsession with Islamist extremism. “We wanted to avoid his turning to violence,” the [RCMP] superintendent said.
Since the RCMP hasn't got a clue about extremist thinking (as is evidenced by its recent handbook fiasco) you can see why it failed to make any headway with the "revert". And in light of the fiasco of two Canadian soldiers hit and one killed by this jihadi, one can't help but think that maybe he should have been allowed to run off to wage jihad with ISIS, where he may well have perished, instead of being "outreached" into waging vehicular jihad here at home.

Krugman's Bookish Paranoia

Guess what? According to brainiac Paul Krugman, Amazon is part of a vast, right-wing conspiracy to ship conservative books quicker than it ships leftist ones.

Islamic Scholar Sez Muslim Chicks MUST Cover Up (Thereby Revealing the Root Cause of "Honour" Crimes)

He also says it is incumbent upon a female's close male relatives to ensure that she does so:
The problem with many men now is that they resemble mice and behave like bears. A Muslim is responsible for his family. Allah has ordered us to save ourselves and our families from the fire whose fuel is people and stones. As such, fathers, or other adult household members, with the mother, have the responsibility of raising children who truly believe and understand their religion. This is something that requires much attention, and is a great responsibility, particularly in the West. Children have to be raised loving Allah and His Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the way of the Muslims. Such children would not normally question applying the rulings of Islam.
Now, when none of this has been done, the ruling of course remains: it is obligatory for the wife/sister/mother to cover. Her not doing so is an evil (munkar). The other household members are obliged to try to get her to cover, while this is most incumbent on her husband or father...
Not surprisingly, husbands or fathers are also the ones who may take it upon themselves to restore a family's "honour" should the wife/sister/mother refuse to cover up.

You Didn't Build That!

Slate's John Swansburg tells the Ceeb Jian Ghomeshi that all that "self-made man" stuff is a pernicious myth that has done far more harm than good. (A message that's muy simpatico in Ceeb corridors, since its default setting, too, is hard leftist and it therefore loves to see people dependent on big government.)

Opera Buff Phylis Chesler Repulsed By the Met's Latest Production, Parts of Which Remind Her of Nazi Propaganda

She writes that the opera's libretto
is not even-handed. The villains have more lines.
For example, the terrorists command 11 arias — 12, with the “Chorus of Exiled Palestinians.” The Klinghoffers have two arias each, toward the end of the opera; add the exiled Jewish chorus and you have five arias for the innocent victims versus 12 for their victimizers.
And better lines: The Palestinians sing: “My father’s house was razed / in nineteen forty-eight / when the Israelis passed / Over our street.”
The Jews sing: “When I paid off the taxi, I had no money left.”
Indeed, the obsession with Jews and money is reminiscent of Nazi propaganda. The terrorist Rambo sings: “But wherever poor men / Are gathered they can / Find Jews getting fat . . . America / Is one big Jew.”
Pretty catchy, no? As is the Met's advertising slogan ("See it. Then decide") As is Zionhass in general. But wait--it gets worse:
Leon Klinghoffer had suffered several strokes. He lacked full use of his hands, his legs were paralyzed, his speech slurred — and this is whom Molqui murders and throws overboard with his wheelchair.
Only a dead and murdered Jew — “Leon Klinghoffer’s body” — is allowed to sing his death with some measure of grace (although most of the lyrics are incomprehensible).
"Leon Klinghoffer's body" sings? Along with being grotesque, that is seriously messed up.

Klavan Flays Friedman

Well, somebody had to:
Thomas Friedman wishes the U.S. could be “China for a day,” so we could “authorize the right solutions,” without all that congress and debate and voter business getting in the way. Friedman is also the guy who felt Barack Obama was “leading on national security,” in 2012, which would be after the president withdrew our forces from Iraq. He also wondered aloud whether Obama ”is the most pro-Israel president in history or just one of the most.” Friedman graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis and got an M.Phil from Oxford and — read his columns — he’s an idiot.
Speaking of idiots who admire China's authoritarianism...hello, Justin T.!

Palestinian Zionhass, By the Book

Here are some titles that the PA flogged at this year's Frankfurt book fair, Europe's largest event of its kind:
  • “The Zionist Deception Dictionary.” A book based on the notorious “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” The “Protocols” have long been a favorite of Palestinian propagandists.
  • “Jewish Terms: Beware of Them!” Another so-called reference volume. An example of a Jewish term of which the reader should beware: The “myth” of the “Nazi Crematoria.”
  • “Jews Converted to Islam by the Prophet,” by Muhamad Ala Batir. A kind of ‘success stories’ volume.
  • “The Buraq Wall,” by Jehad J. Al Ayesh. An entire book devoted to arguing that Jews have no connection or claim to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. “Worshipping at the Wall is a new heresy [propagated by] the religion of the Jews,” the book declares (p.31). The author rants about “Jewish subversion” (p. 31), “Jewish aggressions to Judaize the Wall” (p. 37), and the like. Not surprisingly, it concludes that “the Buraq Wall is the property of Muslims” and must be under exclusive Muslim control (p. 40).
  • A booklet called “The Jewish Plot to Establish a Temple to Judaize Jerusalem.” Standard Palestinian conspiracy-mongering.
  • They're obviously out of their minds and in no condition to run their very own state, much less negotiate a deal that would lead to one.
