Suzuki on the Syllabus: Grade 10 "Civics" Indoctrination in Ontario

My son, who's in Grade 10, is obsessed with politics. He is thus delighted that he has a class in Civics this year. His enthusiasm has been somewhat tempered, however, by the fact that, this being an Ontario Ministry of Education course, a certain, ahem, bias has been built in. For example, at the moment his class is doing a section on--wait for it--"Global Citizenship."

Yikes!

Here's part of what it entails. I've bolded the parts that make me want to, well, heave:
Citizenship Within the Global Context IC5.01 – analyse contemporary crises or issues of international significance (e.g., health and welfare, disasters, human rights, economic development, environmental quality) in the context of the global community;

Page 12 • Civics - Open
IC5.02 – summarize the rights and responsibilities of citizenship within the global context, as based on an analysis of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989); IC5.03 – research and summarize civic actions of individuals and non-governmental organizations that have made a difference in global affairs (e.g., Cardinal Paul-Emile Léger, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Craig Kielburger, David Suzuki, Jean Vanier, Red Cross, Frontier College, Doctors Without Borders, YWCA/YMCA); IC5.04 – compare the contributions of individuals, as explored in the student summaries, to arrive at a definition of the term “global citizen”; IC5.05 – examine and describe methods of electing governments in other countries (e.g., France, Israel, South Africa, Ireland).
So nice of them to put the two together, no?

That's our Min of Ed for you--indoctrinating, er, sorry, educating our kids to become good "global citizens." The kind of citizen who votes for leftists and who wants to join a mainstream Zion-loathing NGO like, say, Amnesty International.

Update: If Grade 10 Civics gets a "yikes!," this OISE stuff merits, at the very least, an "egad!" (h/t BCF).

When they screen 'An Inconvenient Truth' (as they did for our kids), you might go as ballistic as we did. We gave the teacher a copy of 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' and insisted he play it to the class to show the other (more scientific and truthful) side of the story. To his credit, he did. I'll hang on to our copy in case you need it . . . .
