I remember when it was almost time for him to start Nursery school, for which being diaper-free was a pre-requisite. As the weeks of summer came and went, and we weren't quite there yet, it looked as though he might not make the deadline. And then suddenly, on what seemed like a single day, it was a done deal, a fait accompli.
As we drove in our minivan on that No-D (Diaper) Day, I turned to my adorable toddler, sitting there behind me in his kiddie car seat, and, bursting with maternal joy, I said, "I'm so proud of you. You don't go in your diaper any more. You use the potty...You're such a big boy!"
Without skipping a beat he looked up at me with his huge blue eyes (which have since grown more greyish than blueish) and said: "I can drive a car now?"
"Well, no," I said, "you're not quite that big."
And now the years have flown by--I mean that literally; where did they go?--and today, finally, he is old enough to drive a car now (and I told him so in his birthday card).
And that's the reason why, as his ever-loving and oh-so-soppy mommy, I find myself so verklempt today.

Congrats to you both, our 16 year old just started his driving lessons this week.
Time flies by so fast cherish every moment you share.
Our eldest is now in Alberta for a Summer job we miss him dearly already gone 2 months.
Time flies--tell me about it. I don't even want to think about what a basket case I'll be when he goes off to university in two years.
