The TDSB's Student Equity Program Advisors (SEPAs) have been busy delivering their second year of Student Equity Leadership training to Student Council executive members in over 80 schools, reaching over 500 secondary school students.Anti-Classism? Anti-Ableism? SuperCouncils? Is it just me, or is the TDSB sounding more and more nutty and Orwellian every freaking day? (Anti-Ableism--which enemy of the English language invented that one?)
The purpose of the training is to provide student council leaders with an awareness of critical equity issues. This helps ensure they are reflective and representative of the wide diversity of the students within their schools. Using interactive games like Dr. Equity, debating games and YouTube clips, students discussed facets of the TDSB Equity Foundation Statement and Commitments to Equity Policy Implementation and the five Pillars of Equity (Anti-Racism, Anti-Sexism, Anti-Homophobia, Anti-Classism and Anti-Ableism). They also learned about their Human/Student Rights and how all this can help them be stronger more equitable student leaders for their schools and neighbouring communities.
As part of an ongoing TDSB consultation project, some students also gave feedback to central SEPA staff on communicating plans & initiatives with students across the system. This feedback compliments the TDSB's established process of consulting with SuperCouncil...

Just like Jihad seems to be the unnamed sixth pillar of Islam, is the sixth pillar of TDSB's Equity to be "Affirmative Action" (i.e. discrimation on the basis of race, religion, color, etc, against selection on the basis of merit).
I find it interesting how the TDSB five principles of Equity are described in the same terms as that of one of the most non-equitable religions in the world describe their principles: as a "Pillar".
