From the standpoint of Ha'aretz's editorial board, getting favorably quoted by the _New York Times_ trumps the survival of their nation. It is just a matter of priorities.
In fairness, I should say that I do not think Israeli Leftists are not any more suicidal than those of other Western countries: just look at Europe . . . heck just look at the U. S.! But I agree that Israel's risk of annihilation has a physical immediacy that is attenuated in the rest of the West; one would expect the near prospect of thermonuclear genocide would serve to concentrate the minds of even the most doctrinaire Leftists . . . but I guess one would think wrong.
