U.K. Docs in Hot Water Over FGM Involvement
Gotcha!:
A UK doctor originally [from] Somalia from will no longer be allowed to practice medicine in the UK after he was discovered to have given advice about how to arrange female genital mutilation (FGM) abroad to an undercover reporter posing as an aunt coming to inquire about having the procedure for her two nieces.
Dr. Ali Mao-Aweys was secretly filmed telling a reporter from the Sunday Times that he could arrange for FGM to be carried out on the girls, who he presumed to be aged 10 and 13.
Two years after the story broke, a medical malpractice tribunal ruled just days ago that he would be immediately struck off the medical register in the UK, saying that Mao-Aweys behavior was "at the extreme end of the spectrum of serious misconduct and was damaging to the public's trust and confidence in the profession."
Mao-Aweys, a general practitioner, operated two private clinics in Birmingham and Haringey, in north London.
The undercover reporter also investigated a dentist, Dr. Omar Sheikh Mohammed Addow. Omar was struck off the register by the General Dental Council last year after the story broke that Omar had actually offered to perform the mutilation.
Move over, Sweeney Todd!
