CAIRO – A leading American Muslim organization has urged mosque and community leaders to offer a helping hand to young Muslims who might be leaning toward extremist ideology by engaging troubled youth rather than shunting them.
“Looking at this issue is a lot like preventing gang violence when young men are recruited into gangs,” Salam Al-Marayati, president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, was quoted by Pasadena Star News.
“It's very similar here when you're looking at young Muslim men being recruited into extremist groups.”
Al-Marayati was speaking at a forum on Islamic radicalization at All Saints Church on Sunday.
The event was called after both deceased Boston Marathon suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev and before him convert Adam Gadahn, who eventually became a spokesman for Al-Qaida, were kicked out of US mosques after exhibiting worrisome behavior.
MPAC leader added that mosque leaders should be trained on intervention techniques as opposed to shunting the rare person who could be on the path toward radicalization.
He added that the Muslim Public Affairs Council was already working with other Muslim groups to host such a training in Washington DC in the coming months.
“It's talking to young people about their challenges and opportunities, about their opportunity not only to be leaders of the Muslim community but to be leaders of our country, to be champions of human rights, to deal with grievances, address them in a non-violent manner, to provide social programs in underprivileged communities,” Al-Marayati said...Given that MPAC is what you might call faux-moderate or ersatz-centrist, it's a pitch that might go something like this: "Hey, kids, if you want to see sharia make inroads into the kafir's body politic, relax, have patience, take a cold shower, because it's going to happen--eventually--sans self-detonation. And since kafirs set the bar for what constitutes "moderation" so low--i.e. if we say we don't want to blow them up we're seen as being ipso facto "moderate"--the day when sharia gets to call the shots in the U.S. may well happen a lot sooner that you think."
For me, this is the icing on the cake, the pearl onion in the Martini, the cherry on the faux-moderate sundae: Al-Marayati is a truther who thinks Israel was behind 9/11.
