I attribute it to "the Susan Boyle effect". Just as you don't expect to hear a glorious sound emanating from the larynx of a decidedly ordinary-looking woman (typically these sorts of amateurs sound more like William Hung), the last thing you expect to hear coming out of the homeless man with the wild hair and the ravaged face is the dulcet tone of an AM radio hit-spinner.
When such an unexpected juxtaposition is captured on YouTube, the disconnect is so shocking that it causes a sensation.
