The Bar Mitvah as Glitzy, Kitschy Vegas Excess, Or the Bar Mitvah as an Exercise in Lefty Feelgoodism and "Social Justice"? Those Are Our Only Choices?

That's what this NYT article would have us believe. Granted the former is all "bar" while the latter is all "mitzvah," but wouldn't it be nice if you could inject some actual Judaism into the mix? How about seeing it as an occasion to read from the Torah in front of friends, family and your synagogue community and a celebration of one's coming of age, religiously speaking? Isn't that, and not the Vegas glitz or the leftist sanctimony, really what it's all about?
