Just weeks after a revolution in Tunisia toppled its decades-old dictatorship, a similar movement in Egypt is poised to overthrow the 30-year old regime of Hosni Mubarak. Please join us for a city-wide, family-friendly rally and march in downtown Toronto in support of the Egyptian people's struggle for freedom and democracy, and to support all freedom struggles across the region. Please bring your placards, banners, and noise-makers.

Organized by

Canadian Coptic Association
Egyptian National Association for Change
Toronto Egypt Solidarity Campaign
Canadian Arab Federation
Canadian Peace Alliance
Toronto Coalition to Stop the War
Okay, I get why the CAF and the "peaceniks" are up for another anti-Israel bash demonstration for "change" in Egypt, but what on earth are the Copts, victims of Muslim Arab persecution, doing in such dubious company?

Possibly, at least some Copts are hoping that, if they make an appearance or two at events like this, maybe their dhimmitude will not get too much worse, should post-Mubarak Egypt fall under the sway of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is, in my opinion, a vain hope, but you really cannot blame them; one thing Christian communities in or on the margin of Muslim lands have learned is that they cannot count on the substantial support of their coreligionists in the West. Even in Iraq, where the U. S.--with the most ardently Christian population among the great powers--has large, powerful armed forces in place, the persecution of the Chaldean Christian community has met with indifference.

Carlos P.--The Copts can't possibly believe that the Canadian Arab Federation is its friend.

BCF--Hight time for the Copts, of all people, to get a clue, no?

Roz--Sickening but not unexpected.

Scaramouche, I, too, doubt that the Copts believe that the Canadian Arab Federation is their friend. But remember that the Copts have been immersed in dhimmitude since the 7th century, and nothing since the collpase of the Crusades in the 13th century has demonstrated a willingness on the part of the West to champion their cause. As I see it, the Copts who marched in Queen's Park have decided that the Muslim Brotherhood will wind up running the show in Egypt, and they are hoping--in vain, I believe, as I noted originally--that by "sucking up" to the future masters of Egypt, they will mitigate the harshness of their coreligionists' future treatment back in Egypt. I agree that the whole thing is pathetic, but it reflects the reality of their plight.
