Some years ago, the B'nai Brith complained to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council when a noted Holocaust-denying cleric from Pakistan told TV viewers that the Koran commanded Muslims to wage jihad physically, and if they weren't up to that, to wage it financially. The CBSC ruled that that was perfectly alright because A) when the cleric spoke of jihad, he didn't really mean, you know, jihad, and B) he didn't raise him voice.
Fast forward a few years, and someone complains to the same TV watchdog when a Christian evangelical quotes that infamous hadith about the end times, when Muslims will get rid of all Jews, and even the rocks and trees (save for one certain kind of Jew tree) will rat out the Jews' hiding places. The same CBSC rules that that utterance does contravene codified "standards," and is offensive--to Muslims. (Ezra Levant and Kathy Shaidle discuss it here.)
To recap: a Muslim cleric calling for jihad over Canadian airwaves--okey-dokey. A Christian citing hateful Islamic teachings--Islamophobic and un-Canadian.
As a beloved lefty TV icon used to say: "And that's the way it is."
Update: Cool! There's a "Save the Gharqad Tree" facebook page.
