A local Jewish federation is questioning the Toronto Transit Commission's decision to appoint York University student Krisna Saravanamuttu to its new customer service advisory panel. He also brings the perspective of an avowed Israel-basher, so maybe he can advise them on escape routes for cornered Jews. Oh, wait. They should probably have appointed one of the cornered Jews if they wanted that perspective.
As incoming president of the university's student federation, Mr. Saravanamuttu was sanctioned last year for participating in a crowd that allegedly cornered members of the Hillel student group, chanting slogans such as "Zionism is racism" and "Racists off campus."
The incident "forced Jewish students to seek safety in the Hillel lounge, where they were virtually barricaded," said Howard English, spokesman for the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.
"We have to wonder whether, under these circumstances, [Mr. Saravanamuttu] should be called to the public service.... His participation in [those events] is not conducive to bringing people together, which is the main purpose of public service."
In selecting Mr. Saravanamuttu, the TTC cited his reliance on public transit as a youth growing up in one of the city's poorer neighbourhoods, saying he brings "the perspective of student riders" to the panel...
What next--Jaggi Singh for mayor?
