I feel the need to observe that, 14 years after the 9/11/0, and with the global jihad gaining ground every day, it seems more than a little bizarre that the way the U.S. chose to respond to attacks on its soil by Al Qaeda jihadis whose leader was a Saudi based in Afghanistan was not just by taking out the Taliban but by going into Iraq and toppling Saddam Hussein.
Not that Hussein wasn't one of the world's worst of the worst, but now more than ever, the idea that we could transform Iraq into a democracy (or rather, a weird sharia-democracy hybrid) such that it would become a light unto the Arab nations--and let's not have any talk about Islam not being a "religion" of peace, as George W. Bush insisted it was shortly after the attacks--seems like the height of wishful thinking if not a deeply deranged fantasy.
