Queers Against Israeli Apartheid won't be making an appearance at this year's Pride parade. Instead, the dykes and trannies have stepped up to fill the Zionhass "void" left by the QuAIA's non-presence.

Actually, there is plenty of Pride in "apartheid". Anyone who's ever seen the crowds at Tel Aviv pride festivities, an event attended by lots of liberated Arab LGBTers who wouldn't dare let it all hang out in, say, Gaza, when the sharia decreed penalty for gayness is death. But that's beside the point for those who never let the facts get in the way of their animus toward the world's only Jewish state, 'else how could they display their lefty bona fides? FYI, here's the info about tomorrow's protest:

MARCH WITH US AT THE (OFFICIAL) DYKE MARCH IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE!

We plan to march as a Palestine solidarity contingent at this year's official Dyke March. We will be using the term "Israeli Apartheid" in our signs, banners, and messaging. Our approach is one of peaceful non-violence and we ask anyone who wishes to march with us to respect this – we do not want confrontations with the police or any others present and we do not anticipate being arrested. We invite anyone who wishes to denounce Israeli Apartheid, to denounce censorship, and to stand in solidarity with queers in Palestine to join us. Our contingent will be gathering outside the 519 at 1:30 pm.

Although we respect those who wish to participate in the "Take Back the Dyke" event, we are a different group. We will not be boycotting the Dyke March. Rather we will be marching in protest, and in denunciation of the forces that have attempted to silence us. We will march in the Dyke March as many of us have done for many years – we will not be banned!

Mansur Counsels Harper to Find His Inner Burke

Salim Mansur wants Stephen Harper to buck up and act, well, more like a real conservative:

For conservatives, as government became bigger and more intrusive in the affairs of the people, freedom and tradition of the people who founded Canada and built it have been diminished.

It is not tradition conservatives defend nostalgically. It is diminution of individual freedom with the expansion of government oversight — the pall, for instance, cast over freedom of speech as the “mother” of all freedom — that weakens, even nullifies, the partnership [Edmund] Burke wrote about.

If Harper listens again to his inner voice and acts to defend principles he once so admirably defended, he could rise to true greatness without drums and whistles, and Canada will be served better by his government.

Hear, hear. Years ago, before he rose to highest office, Harper once described our "human rights" commissions--a huge expansion of (supposedly arm's length) government oversight if they ever was one (or, to be more accurate, 14)--as "totalitarianism." And so they are--still. As such, one would think that ratcheting back the Commissars' power would be a Harper priority. It's not. And one has the sense that in all likelihood it won't ever be one.

Globe and Mail Raises Spectre of "Conservative Values"

Remember that "hidden agenda" we kept hearing about, the one that was bound to be unveiled, we were told, should the Conservatives gain a majority (and which so far appears to be an agenda for the Tories to creep e'er leftward)? I think this (a snippy piece in the Globe and Mail) is what the scaremongers may have had in mind:

The Conservative government is strengthening the symbolic power of the military in public life by having a member of the Canadian Forces play a prominent role in citizenship ceremonies.

In an operational bulletin issued earlier this year, the Department of Citizenship and Immigration said highlighting the service of members of the armed forces is a way to underline to every new Canadian the rights and responsibilities that come with citizenship.

The bulletin, which describes military service as one of the highest expressions of citizenship, states that members of the military should be seated on the main platform with the citizenship judge, that they can stand in the receiving line congratulating new citizens and that they may give a two- to three-minute speech. Where possible, the bulletin says the preference is for veterans of the war in Afghanistan.

The increased prominence of the military at these ceremonies is in keeping with other gestures made by Stephen Harper’s government. The new citizenship handbook, Discover Canada, for example, which was introduced by Minister Jason Kenney in 2009, placed much more emphasis on Canadian military history than the preceding guide.

Michael Fellman, a professor emeritus of history at Simon Fraser University, said it’s part of a gradual militarization of Canadian culture under the Conservatives.

“The Tories are in a long-range campaign to change Canadian values and make them more conservative,” Prof. Fellman said. “This is a way to show that the military is at the core of the meaning of citizenship...

The "true north strong and free?" Funny, I thought that was a Canadian value (or was until that charlatan with the je ne sais quois and the rose in his lapel got hold of the joint). But, hey, if that's a "conservative value" it sounds pretty good to moi.
