MUNICH — Iran’s foreign minister said Sunday that his country is open to a renewed offer of direct talks with the United States on its nuclear program and looks favorably on a proposal for a new round of multilateral nuclear negotiations on Feb. 25 in Kazakhstan.

 

But the Iranian official, Ali Akbar Salehi, does not have the power in the Iranian system to decide these matters on his own, so his comments were viewed by European and American officials as more atmospheric, designed for the transatlantic audience at the Munich Security Conference, than definitive...

Speaking of "atmospheric," the Grandiose Ayatollah's weather forecast for the Jewish State is cloudy with a chance of A-bombs.

The mausoleum containing the embalmed body of North Korea’s late leader Kim Jong-Il has been opened to tourists, who must follow a strict protocol. 

Young Pioneer Tours, a five-year-old tour group specializing in off-the-beaten path destinations, was the first group to gain admission when the mausoleum was opened to the public on Jan. 17. Gareth Johnson, managing director and founder of the group, said the tour was planned for January because the country would just be re-opening to tourists. (According to Johnson, North Korea is essentially closed for tourism in December and early January). 

“We were hopeful that if we timed it right, the mausoleum would be open and we would gain access,” he said. “It was a combination of great planning and a little luck.” 

He described the experience as “surreal.” While the other mausoleums he has visited house people he has only read about in history books, this was  someone he had seen regularly on the news in his lifetime. 

The people on the tour, Johnson said, were “very moved. It was a very intense experience.” 

And, said Johnson, Kim Jong-Il looks pretty good, considering his state. “He looks like a person,” he said. “Not waxy at all.”...

Well, considering that he looked pretty waxy while alive, I guess death could only be an improvement. That said, how do we know that this is the real Kim Jong-Il and not a waxen Madame Tussaud-like replacement?

Online activists in Saudi Arabia are calling for harsher punishments for child abuse after reports that a prominent cleric received only a light sentence after confessing to the beating death of his 5-year-old daughter. 

The social media campaign gaining momentum Sunday is the latest attempt to use the Internet to pressure the kingdom's ultraconservative rulers. 

Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV programs, was arrested in November on charges of killing the girl. The reports said he questioned the child's virginity. 

Saudi media say he was freed last week after serving a short prison term and agreeing to pay $50,000 in "blood money" to avoid a possible death sentence. 

The money was presumably offered to the girl's mother or other relatives.

Expect to see him back in his guest spots on Islamic TV--just as soon as the heat dies down.
