Justin Trudeau's Identity Politics Routine: Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution?
It's the latter--obviously--as Anthony Furey observes in his take-down of Justin's pathetically wimpish Canada Day 150 performance:
After First Nations protesters erected a teepee on Parliament Hill, they held a mean-spirited press conference where they took disrespectful and racist shots at a CBC reporter that would not have been tolerated from any other group.
Instead of denouncing this needless nastiness, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau granted the protesters a private audience. He then called on all Canadians to respect those who don’t celebrate Canada 150.
He could have pointed out that these protesters are fringe voices and, in fact, there are many thousands of empowered First Nations entrepreneurs out there making their communities and our whole country more prosperous by their ingenuity.
Instead he played into their divisions, joining them in frowning on our history: “We recognize that over the past decades, generations, indeed centuries Canada has failed Indigenous peoples.”
His divisive top adviser Gerald Butts even tweeted out the activist hashtag “reoccupation.” It should not be too much to ask that our own PM and his team stand up for a unified Canada on our 150th birthday. It should not be, but with this PM, a Liberal squish to the max, God help us all, it is.
Charles and Camilla Have a Fit of Uncontrollable Laughter Upon Hearing a Performance By Authentic Inuit Throat Singers
I know exactly how they feel. The same thing happened to me and my husband when, years ago, we first heard this kind of singing at the annual folk festival in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. (Admittedly, the fact that the "singers" were an elderly, gnome-like twosome, a husband and wife, was an added spur to our peals of inappropriate laughter.)
Update: You knew this was coming--Charles and Camilla accused of disrespecting throat singers. Expect an abject royal apology in five, four, three, two...
Update: I am reminded of the time, many years ago, when our friends were visiting from the Netherlands with their then-young children. (These friends ended up immigrating to Canada and are now Canadian citizens.) Their two kids, a girl and a boy, both under the age of ten, neither of whom spoke English, began to laugh hysterically when they heard Louis Armstrong singing (on an Ella and Louis CD) for the first time.
Were they being "racist"? "Disrespectful"?
No, sir. They were simply reacting to what, to them, was a very strange voice, one they had never heard before.
Same deal with Chuck and the wife (and me and my husband), I'd say.
Lefty Dopplegangers?
Christie Blatchford Accounts for the Relatively Paltry Turn Out (25,000 Instead of the Predicted 50,000) at Justin's Canada Day Par-Tay
Blatchford 'splains why so many decided to stay away. It wasn't the rain. It was the desire to avoid a scolding:
By now, with the Vimy Ridge 100th anniversary celebration not far in the rear-view mirror, Canadians know precisely what to expect on such occasions — paeans to equity, refrains praising the collective modern tolerance (but damning the oppression that went before and lingers on), rote odes to all that is indigenous — and thought better of it.Can you blame them?
Jihad Pays Off Big Time for Omar Khadr
The former "boy soldier" is set to get an apology and a $10 million pay off from Canada's boy prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
An incentive for other young'uns to go the Khadr route? And how much of the moolah will he share with his extremist kinfolk?
Update: My poem for Omar and his pay day:
He wuz robbed, I say; robbed!

An ex-Gitmo sojourner named KhadrUpdate: You won't believe the respectful-verging-on-the-worshipful treatment Omar's dad gets from Wikipedia. It's more hagiography than biography:
Had a dad, a real jihad nhadr.
But now, whadya know?
Omar's rolling in dough.
(Seems his plight is his bread and his bhadr).
Ahmed Said Khadr (Arabic: أحمد سعيد خضر) (March 1, 1948 – October 2, 2003) was an Egyptian citizen who had ties to a number of militant and Mujahideen leaders in Afghanistan, including Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda. He was accused of being a "senior associate" and financier of al-Qaeda, but his family insisted he maintained the contacts to help his charity work.[1][2]
Khadr worked with a number of charitable non-governmental organizations that served Afghan refugees and set up agricultural projects.[3] He set up two orphanages for children whose parents had been killed in the Soviet invasion of the 1980s. He funded the construction of Makkah Mukarama Hospital in Afghanistan with his own savings,[4][5][6] as well as seven medical clinics in the refugee camps of Pakistan.[7]
Due to his prominent regional role, Khadr also helped negotiate peaceful compromises between rival warlords, power brokers and leaders.[8][9] The Canadian government had considered him the country's highest-ranking member of al-Qaeda,[10] and in 1999, the United Kingdom had his name added to a United Nations list of al-Qaeda members.[11]
The Canadian attorney Dennis Edney, the lawyer for the Khadr family, has challenged the assumption that Khadr was a member of al-Qaeda, saying in 2001 that he was "really interested in obtaining one piece of evidence that would show indeed that Mr. Khadr was actually a terrorist. To me, it's just folklore."[12] Khadr's imam in Canada, Ali Hindy, spoke after his death, saying "I don't think that he was al-Qaeda, but I think he felt that now he became part of Afghanistan."[13] His friends described him as being "proud of [being a] Canadian citizen",[13] while politicians and media have suggested that he disliked the country.[14] ...Wow. How did this paragon of altruism--a veritable Albert Schweitzer and Mother Theresa rolled into one--not win the Nobel Peace Prize?
He wuz robbed, I say; robbed!

Justin Trudeau's Dopey, PoMo 150th Birthday Revelry Is an Insult to Canadians...But Only to the Ones Born Here
Mark Steyn has a few things to say about Justin's lame-o birthday celebration:
While we're on the subject, I still can't get over quite what a bust Justin Trudeau's Liberals made of Canada's sesquicentennial. But, if you've ever tried, you'll know it's hard to organize a milestone birthday party for someone you despise, and evidently that goes for countries, too. As Bono told the crowd, ""Whether you have just arrived from Syria or your roots go back thousands of years, this is your home" - which contrast conveniently omits all the people in between, who happen to be the fellows who built the country and quite like it, or at any rate more than the chaps with the ten-thousand-year roots over at that teepee who were raising clenched fists during the singing of "O Canada" and "God Save the Queen".
If Bono's toast was a sin of omission, Justin was more explicit, declaring that the more Canadian you are the less Canadian you are - at least when compared to a nice Syrian lad fleeing the Trump terror and asking where the Niagara Falls welfare office express check-in is. Sure, all those Gordies and Dereks may think they love their country but they don't love it as much as you Ahmeds and Omars do:Actually, my forebears on both my maternal and paternal sides "chose this country," too--but that was way back in the early part of the 20th Century. And I bet even they would find this prime minister's pandering to be as embarrassing and unpleasant as I do.
"No!" Trudeau continued. "You chose this country. This is your country more than it is for others because we take it for granted."He means it. "I think being able to choose it, rather than being Canadian by default, is an amazing statement of attachment to Canada," says Justin. Just like Caitlyn Jenner is more of a woman than all you default women will ever be.
"Islamist Motives"
That, apparently, is the current euphemism in Sweden for "jihad". (According to the linked Local report, there are supposedly 3,000 "extremists" in Sweden, 2,000 of whom are said to be harboring the aforementioned euphemism. One wonders whether there really are 1,000 non-Muslim "extremists," or if authorities have confabulated the number in an effort to try to downplay the number of "extremist" Muslims.)
"Sensitive" Anti-Semitic Chicago Dykes In Dire Need of Respite
After acting all hatey due to being "triggered" by the sight of a Jewish symbol, these "victims" are crowdfunding to pay for some much needed r&r:
The organisers of a march which ejected people carrying LGBT pride flags bearing a Star of David are fundraising for a “self-care retreat”, claiming that they have received “countless threats of violence and aggression”.
On Youcaring, a “compassionate crowdfunding” platform, the organisers of the Chicago Dyke March have asked people to fund them so that they “can take a much needed retreat to rest, re-energise & be in a space of pure love”.
Last week, these march organisers were reported to have forced people carrying Jewish Pride flags, which feature a Star of David over the LGBT rainbow, to leave the parade. They claimed that the Jewish star “looked too much like Israeli flags… triggering people and making them feel unsafe”.
One of the Jewish flag wavers said she was ignored when she told the organisers that “being told my Jewish pride is unacceptable, that I can’t be visibly Jewish… actually makes me feel unsafe”.
Far from apologising, the march organisers subsequently made statements re-affirming their decision, saying they had thrown out people who “repeatedly expressed support for Zionism during conversations with Chicago Dyke March collective members”...All those who hot house blossoms (including the Jewish ones) who claim to be "triggered": stop it; stop it right now.

Ducky Tales or: How I Spent My Canada 150 Day
We (along with Jasper the retriever, a.k.a. The World's Happiest Dog™) took a cousin in from Texas down to Lake Ontario where, yes, we saw the giant rubber ducky! It looked like this:

As one wag (okay, 'twas I) quipped, the duck, which cost our profligate provincial authorities over 200K to rent for the occasion, is a lot like Premier Kathleen Wynne's government: it's overgrown, full of hot air and a colossal waste of our cash. Also, because of the hordes of celebrants, most decked out in our national colours of red and white, who had descended on Toronto's waterfront, it was rather hard to see.
The ducky was cute, but you know what would have been even more impressive? An immense Ernie swimming nekkid beside it, like some Sesame Street Gulliver in his Lake Ontario bathtub. And, hey, maybe he could have regaled us with his recent meet 'n' greet with some moppets (who are just like you and me) at a Jordanian refugee camp or, even better, with First Nations kids at some remote encampment in the frigid north. Anything to make us "privileged" "colonialists" feel ambivalent about our special day, as some of yesterday's waterfront entertainment, dubbed "Our Home on Native Land," laboured mightily to do.
Epic fail with that one, I'd have to say.
Update: With the Trudeaupian Liberals at the helm, soul-crushing guilt and PoMo ambivalence are the order of Canada Day 150, as Paul Keery writes in the Toronto Sun (my bolds):

Where do we find any such reflection [re the good things about Canada] in the government’s celebration of the sesquicentennial? There isn’t much on the Canada.ca website about Canada’s history.
Instead, Canada has been celebrating “diversity and inclusion, reconciliation with Indigenous people, youth and the environment”. All worthy, but very contemporary. It seems that this government cannot contemplate anything beyond the present: where is any sense of Canada being the third oldest continuing government on Earth, of Canada’s proud experiment in self-government and respect for rights? Of one mosaic in which all of our stories are respected yet interwoven into one nation?
It’s as if this Canadian government is ashamed of Canada’s past. The Trudeau government’s Canada is a strangely adrift country, a ‘post-modern nation’ celebrating identity politics and its resulting groups rather than celebrating Canada’s national identity. Only historic successes in its four themes matter. Beyond them, so many bad things happened in Canada’s past that there’s not that much to take pride in before 1967 in this government’s view. Move along, people. The Libs are such excruciating drips--and about as joyless as it gets. Here's hoping they're handed their walking papers a.s.a.p.
