Should young Muslim children be allowed in our Mosques? The obvious answer: Yes, of course!Dora? Haraam? If sunny, bland, innocuous Dora, who teaches kids to follow maps and count in Spanish, is verboten, I guess zany, anarchic SpongeBob is beyond the pale.
But the reply that came from the management of a large local Mosque on this subject proved to be very heart-breaking.
That night, one of the woman in-charges from this Mosque was very clear about the Management’s feelings & position on this issue when she angrily told-off one of the parents in saying that “young children & their ‘wretched’ parents who bring them here should NOT be allowed to come to the Mosque!”
“People with younger children should stay at home” and “should only come to the Masjid for Friday prayers or events like the (monthly) Ayat-e-Karima,” she fumed!*
“Children,” she continued in Urdu, echoing the oft-broadcasted years-old pet peeve of this Mosque’s Management, “make too much noise”, “don’t pray”, “run around”, and “play with other children”. “The Masjid is not a playground”. “They distract others from concentrating in prayers.”
“Plus, they (the kids) also bring Dora coloring books with pictures, which are strictly HARAAM (prohibited) inside the Mosque!”...
