Caution: Wet Cement

I wrote a protest song over the weekend and thought I'd share it (but not sing it--trust me, you don't want to hear me sing). It was inspired by that Christopher Hitchens piece about Saul Bellows' fictitious construct, the "Good Intentions Paving Company":

"Diversity" is grand you see--
That's what I always preach.
So many peoples in the world
And we need some of each.
Our multiculti tapestry has many vibrant strands.
Trudeaupia’s a go here in all thy son’s command.

Chorus:
Because of...
Good intentions
In copious amounts.
If you've got good intentions, friend,
That's all the really counts.
Good intentions,
As long as you mean well
No one will even notice if
You pave the road to hell.

In Gaza people suffer so because of a blockade.
We're gonna float a boat in; it cannot be delayed.
So what if Gaza's in the hands of terrorist Hamas?
We have such good intentions that
You cannot make a fuss.

Because of...
Good intentions
In copious amounts....

The ardent fight for “human rights”
Is noble, brave and pure.
A lot of folks don’t have ‘em;
They need ‘em, that’s for sure.
Our plethora of HRCs ensure that all is "fair".
And if you call 'em "commissars"
You know that they won't care.

Because of...
Good intentions
In copious amounts...

Free speech they say's the linchpin of
A free society.
But sometimes people says stuff that's
Construed as "blasphemy."
Expression must be "balanced" with
What could well give offence.
And once you all all hold your tongues
Submission can commence.

You know that...
Good intentions
In copious amounts.
If you've got good intentions, friend,

That's all that really counts.
Good intentions,
As long as you mean well
No one will even notice when
You pave the road to hell.
No one will even notice when
You pave the road to hell.
